Brenda and Cam's Olympic Adventure

UVIC was home to a last-ditch qualifier for the Beijing games in Women's Field Hockey, Brenda and I went and watched Canada take on Malaysia in an opening round game. Of the six teams at the tourney only the victor would advance to China, so every game was critical.

Canada in short sleeves, Malaysia in long sleeves.

We had no idea what was going on most of the match and maybe that was a good thing. It is a strange game, the women have to stay low to the ground to control the ball so it seems like it is one of those rare sports where being tall would be a disadvantage. The Canadians controlled the ball for much of the match but had trouble putting the ball in the net.

Canada attempts a "short corner."

In the end Canada prevailed 1-0, withstanding a furious Malaysian rally in the last five minutes. It was cold and damp but a thoroughly enjoyable and different way to spend a Tuesday night. Sadly our team did not qualify for the Olympics, finishing fourth behind qualifier South Korea, Italy and Ireland.
